Hacienda Comalapa has been in Luis Barrientos’ family for several generations. After choosing cacao farming over animal farming, he managed to plant a total of 50 trees over the past decade. Using only organic techniques —from seeding and harvesting to fermenting and drying— he has succeeded in growing extraordinary high quality beans in the region.
By changing to the cultivation of cocoa, he has been able to establish social and human development, while continuing to preserve the surrounding rainforest and their water source. Winning El Salvador’s Cocoa of Excellence in 2021 placed Comalapa farm in the fine flavour cocoa world map and gives hope of a bright future.
